The Storyteller's Valley
Creating landscape, myth and identity through hauntological space, distributed authorship and transmedial imagination
The Storyteller's Valley is an exploration of how we experience the world around us, and the ways in which we position ourselves in its history, landscapes and stories through creative expression and communication. This website is a repository of archival and creative research that explores the ways in which Ireland’s ancient oral storytelling tradition permeates through Irish landscape and identity, and is transformed through the interaction of communities with their local environment and history. Through exploration of the valley of Glenasmole in Dublin, The Storyteller's Valley delves into how knowledge is created and curated through storytelling and remediation, as the people of the valley constantly interact with history and myth embedded into the landscape. It investigates the role of audiovisuality and new digital media as a platform for new voices and mediums, and a tool for distributed authorship within the storytelling tradition.
Drawing from research on new media, audiovisuality and hauntology, the project explores these aspects of Glenasmole through archival and original material which are scattered throughout the site. Through practice research and creative documentation, the project hopes to further reflect on the process of mythologisation and the effects of transmedial remediations on an ancient knowledge tradition.
